Whaling update from Whales and Dolphins Conservation Society

South Korea has announced that it is ready to resume commercial whaling.
The country will look to the International Whaling Commisson (IWC), which banned commercial whaling in 1986, for a quota.
This is dreadful news, which fulfils our worst expectations for the future of whaling.
Last week the IWC considered a deal which would allow Japan legal commercial whaling quotas in return for voluntarily phasing out some of its scientific whaling in Antarctica. WDCS has warned that this deal will lead to an expansion of whaling by attracting new countries, such as South Korea, to commence whaling.
The deal even fails to consider how to address existing Norwegian and Icelandic whaling.
Thank you to all those who have already written to countries urging them to vote against this deal.
It will again be considered at the IWC’s annual meeting in June and we will continue to need your support to ensure it is rejected.

Thank you for your support
